War Department - Military Intelligence Manuals (FM series).
During the pre-war and early war years, manuals issued by Military Intelligence for recognition of ships, aircraft, and armored vehicles were bound into book form (about the same size as a present day paperback novel). They were given the designation:
FM 30-XY
where X indicated the weapon system covered by the manual and Y indicated the country the manual covered.
The possible X values were:
3 - Aircraft
4 - Armored Vehicles
5 - Warships
The possible Y values were:
0 - US forces
1 - British forces
2 - Combinations of foreigh forces
3 - French forces
4 - Russian/Soviet forces
5 - German forces
8 - Japanese forces
9 - Italian forces
Thus, a manual designated FM 30-38 would cover Japanese aircraft, while a manual designated FM 30-51 would cover British warships. In most cases, the armored vehicle manuals for each individual country would be too small to justify printing, so they were usually combined into just two designations - FM 30-40 for US vehicles; and FM 30-42 for all foreign vehicles.
Starting in early 1943, the FM manuals were reformatted into a loose leaf 6 inch (high) by 10 inch (wide) format so that new pages could easily be inserted or removed. These manuals were produced with only three designations:
FM 30-30 for all major nations' aircraft (this was a joint manual with the Navy);
FM 30-40 for all major nations' armored vehicles;
FM 30-50 for all major nations' warships (this was a joint manual with the Navy).
